Alexandra Alfaro, PhD Candidate, MS, LMFT

Alexandra Alfaro is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has been with Changing Forward for about 5 years. After completing her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University, she decided to keep her educational train moving and immediately started her PhD. As a PhD Candidate, she is currently working on her dissertation with research focused on school shooters. Alexandra is Certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Hypnotherapy.

Alexandra has experience working with both children and adults in various settings. As an intern, she worked at a substance abuse rehabilitation center and a prison, which first exposed her to working with trauma and co-occurring disorders. She also worked as a therapist and subsequent supervisor at the PROMISE program, where students across Broward County receive short-term counseling during suspension. Alexandra realized her passion for working with students and families, and began working as a therapist for an at-risk school in Broward County.

In private practice, Alexandra is devoted to working with individuals, couples, and families alike. Meeting clients where they are at, she seeks to collaborate with clients to build a picture of their preferred selves and future. She strives to take a step into her client’s frame of reality in her approach, to understand the challenges clients may be facing and offer new perspectives.

Alexandra highly values having strong relationships with her clients, built on a foundation of openness, respect, and above all, trust. She believes that connection breeds understanding, which ultimately breeds more solutions that may be more effective for her clients’ lives.

In addition to her passion for seeing clients reach their goals, Alexandra LOVES animals and travel. On days off, you can catch her with her fiancée and rescue dog, eating at a restaurant or going for a walk together. Alexandra has learned the importance of living life with PRESENCE and seeks to do so every day—life is too short not to LIVE our great experiences!
